Open until 10:30PM, you’ll find billiards tables, darts, a fully stocked bar and loads of great food to pick from. Order the Tomato Basil Soup for some dip action as well, you won’t regret it. That gives you enough time to head down for a cheesy, gooey, melty bacon bomb for your hungry belly. If bars close at 1AM, they’ll be open until 2AM. If bars close at 12AM, they’ll be open until 1AM. The great thing about Aloha Melt Waikiki is that they stay open 1 hour past when most bars close. We love the Bacon Patty Melt, but we LOVE the Bacon Patty Melt after the bars close if you catch our drift. Newly opened in 2021, Aloha Melt Waikiki serves up mouth watering melts to the hungry public. If you’re staying at Hilton Hawaiian Village or a hotel in its vicinity, this is a great watering hole to get in some good late night pupus and drinks. Located on the west side of Waikiki, Chiba-ken is a great Japanese “izakaya” style restaurant that’s worth a visit.

Meanwhile, newcomers continue to arrive, exerting their influence with new glass-and-steel towers that reflect the ocean and sky. They are the legacy of immigrants who brought their culture and perpetuate through menus and festivals traditions that have waned in the rest of the world. Some restaurants are mid-century time capsules (many in the derided strip malls) - of Hawaii and America, and also of other countries, including China, Japan and the Philippines. Honolulu is about juxtapositions - not just of the oft-touted East and West, but of past and present. But this is the Hawaii where the majority of the state’s residents live and work, where its creatives have rediscovered the wisdom and beauty in Hawaii’s indigenous culture and apply it to Kakaako murals and Waikiki hotels’ interior design, to Kaimuki restaurants and Chinatown boutiques. Those in search of an “authentic” Hawaii will often bypass Honolulu, pointing to its strip malls and high-rises, to Waikiki and its crowds, as if Hawaii should be nothing but beaches and jungle.
